selective and differential for Escherichia 0157:H7
General description
The presence of bile salts and crystal violet inhibits the growth of gram-positive microbes thereby enhancing the growth of gram-negative microorganisms.
The specific selectivity of the medium is done by the addition of Cefixime potassium Tellurite supplement towards E. coli 0157:H7 and in turn suppresses the accompanying flora. Addition of sorbitol in the medium along with pH indicator neutral red is used to detect the sorbitol positive colonies which appear red in color. Typical colonies of (sorbitol negative) E. coli 0157 are transparent, colorless to pale yellowish with small diameter.
Enzymatic digest of casein and animal tissue provides nitrogen, vitamins, and amino acids to the growing microbes. Agar is the solidifying agent.
Application
Analysis Note
- The dehydrated media is granulated with light pink color.
- Typical colonies of (sorbitol negative) E. coli 0157 are transparent, colorless to pale yellowish with small diameter.
