General description

Sphingosine (d14:1), also referred as tetradecasphing-4-enine, is a C14 analog of sphingosine. It is a major part of sphingoid bases in Musca domestica larvae and adults.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sphingosine acts as a negative regulator of cell proliferation. It induces apoptosis. It modulates the activities of enzymes such as, phospholipases and protein kinases. In addition, sphingosine also regulate ion channels, cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB-1) receptors and steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1) receptors.
