General description
Urease (urea amidohydrolase; EC 3.5.1.5) is a nickel-dependent metalloenzyme that is found in various plants, bacteria, fungi, algae, and even some invertebrates.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Urease catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia and CO2. It is implicated in the development of enzymology and heme protein chemistry. Bacterial urease acts as a virulence factor and is involved in the pathogenesis of hepatic coma, peptic ulceration, and pyelonephritis.
