Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME)

Assembled SPME fiber with a nitinol-core

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) is a versatile and solvent-free sample preparation technique. It works on the principle of adsorption/absorption and desorption and uses a fiber coated with an extractive phase to concentrate analytes in a sample. It successfully combines the sampling, isolation, and enrichment of an analyte to one step. SPME is used widely for the sampling of environmental volatiles, food & beverages, flavors & fragrances, forensics & toxicology, and pharmaceutical samples.

Smart SPME fibers

The smart SPME fibers are an extension of our expertise and innovation from traditional SPME coatings to smart SPME format for accurate, reliable, and consistent results. Our smart fibers including Carboxen® fibers, dual coated fibers, or overcoated fibers are fitted with a unique chip to offer seamless sample preparation and other including benefits:

  • Traceability to check usage, stroke count, dates of operation, and temperature exposure
  • High-throughput sample preparation
  • Automatic application of correct parameters for each fiber coating

See for more information on Smart SPME Fibers for Automated Sampling.

nitinol-core SPME fibers

The nitinol-core of SPME fibers enhances the fiber performance and the precision of chromatographic results. Fibers with either Carboxen®/Polydimethylsiloxane (CAR/PDMS) or Polydimethylsiloxane/ Divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB) coatings are available with a nitinol-core. Other benefits of nitinol fibers include:

  • Enhanced lot-to-lot and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility
  • Higher fiber durability
  • Similar selectivity and inertness compared to fused silica core fibers

See for more information on Nitinol Core SPME Fibers.

OVERCOATED (OC) SPME FIBERS

The over coating of fibers is a new technology in fiber coating to protect the SPME fiber from matrix components. This allows for immersion of the fiber directly into complex samples ensuring a more efficient extraction (e.g. of semivolatile compounds). Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used to overcoat a PDMS/divinylbenzene (DVB) fiber. The resulting fiber is more physically robust and resistant to chemical fouling and allows for an efficient wash step to also remove adhering matrix.

BioSPME

BioSPME technology greatly improves upon the speed and simplicity compared with current bioanalytical sample preparation techniques employed for plasma protein binding studies and other free analyte analyses. The primary benefits of Supel™ BioSPME devices include:

  • 3x faster workflow compared to rapid equilibrium dialysis based methods
  • Universal 96-pin format, compatible with standard consumables
  • Simple workflow amenable to total automation or manual operation
