General description

Succinic acid, also referred to as butanedioic acid, is an organic acid, which can be synthesized by various microorganisms from different carbon sources. Succinic acid has a wide range of applications in agricultural, food and pharmaceutical industries. It is also utilized as a raw material in the industrial chemical synthesis of numerous chemicals including adipic acid, 1,4-butanediol, tetrahydrofuran, N-methyl pyrrolidinone, 2-pyrrolidinone, succinate salts and γ-butyrolactone. In addition, succinic acid can also be used in the synthesis of biodegradable polymers such as polybutyrate succinate (PBS), polyamides and green solvents.
