General description

FliC (flagellin) is the subunit protein which polymerizes to form the filaments of bacterial flagella. The protein has four-domains (D0, D1, D2, D3).[1]
The encoded flagellin filament contains 55 kDa monomers.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

FliC (flagellin) can activate the innate immune system by TLR5 (toll like receptor 5) and is an important proinflammatory molecule.[1][3] FliC also induces the production of antibodies and is identified as an antigen by CD4+ T cells.[4]
It also stimulates the production of proinflammatory mediators : nitric oxide, interleukin 1 (IL-1), IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor α.[5]
